Green tea: The best beverage on Earth

 


Beverages are the drinks that people take to get a break from work. There are a variety of beverages that benefit people in one way or the other. Hence Green tea is a kind of plant-based beverage that stands out in the long list of health-boosting drinks for its unique flavor and lots of medicinal benefits.

 Green tea is prepared from the dried leaves of the Camellia sinensis bush. [i] Studies show that it is more beneficial than Dark tea. Hence, the handling of leaves in both teas makes them different. The Dark tea leaves are dried, while green tea leaves are delicately steamed, which holds sound polyphenols (Catechins) and cancer prevention agents. A quality green tea dietary enhancement can offer comparable medical advantages and can be easily found at any supermarket.

1.  Catechins (Astringency component in tea)

Catechins are the main components of green tea and are a type of polyphenol, it was earlier known as Tannins. There are four main types of catechins found in tea leaves which were first isolated by a Japanese Doctor Michiyo Tsujimura in 1929 at RIKEN.

    ii.        It decreases blood cholesterol, and inhibits high blood pressure.

  iv.        It is Antioxidant which means it is anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anti-atherosclerosis, and anti-cancer.

  v.        It has an anti-hyperglycemic effect means it lowers the glucose level in the blood. 

2. Caffeine (Bitterness component in tea)

Caffeine is a white-colored alkaloid that acts as a chemical stimulant. It has a bitter taste. Caffeine is one of the important components in tea, coffee, chocolate, many soft drinks, pain relievers, and supplements.

The caffeine content of infused tea beverages is approximately 0.01-0.02%. which means approximately 15-30mg of caffeine per cup of tea consumed.

Amino acids are the component in tea that contributes full-bodied flavor and sweetness. Of these amino acids, more than 60% are theanine, which is unique to tea. Amino acids other than theanine present in tea leaves include glutamine, asparagine, arginine, and serine.

β-carotene is a red-orange colored pigment, found in plants and fruits. Matcha contains five times the β-carotene of carrots. β-carotene is absorbed through the intestinal walls and is then converted mainly by the liver to Vitamin A as necessary, which helps in the maintenance of night vision.
